The town is 27 miles from St. Louis, in St. Charles County. St. Charles County is home to many nationally recognized wineries and vineyards. In fact, the rural area of St. Charles County along the scenic bluffs of the Missouri River is often called the Weinstrasse. Also in St. Charles County is the beautiful August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area, where visitors can hike the Louis and Clark trail as well as fish and hunt. The park has a beautiful picnic area and is also home to a gun range. Also near town is the lovely Quail Ridge Park and the Historic Daniel Boone Home at Lindenwood Park.

During WWII the town supported the war effort when in 1941 the Army bought 17,000 acres of surrounding land. The Weldon Spring Ordnance Works was, at the time, the largest explosives factory in the U.S. Within days of WWII victory, all but 2,000 acres of the land was resold. In the mid-1950s, the United States Atomic Energy Commission constructed a uranium processing plant on that 2,000 acres. The plant produced yellowcake uranium ore until 1966 when the plant closed. The U.S. Department of Energy completed the thorough decontamination of the old site in 2001. Today, you can hike the “Nuclear Waste Adventure Trail.” A path and stairway and leads to the summit, where on starry nights, the hilltop serves as a popular spot for amateur astronomers.
